hey justin,
i've seen the flygirl record at a store near me. i think the oldham song is one of those on song for the broken giant...or rich/black music..or whatever it's called this week. and i've got the "Quelque Chase d'Organique" soundtrack..the oldham song is fair, to be generous..and the rest of the cd is pretty weak..unless you dig luscious jackson...but then i'd have to kill you.

amen,

yo hey mills. The "Libération" limited release is listed on the other palace page (royal stable) in the news section. good luck tracking down a copy, since it appears to be a "subscribers only" release. hence the MP3 chit chat t'other day--some of will's releases are becoming increasingly difficult to come by. If we did some resource-pooling, however, i think everyone (well, more folks, anyway)wins. hey if nobody thinks it's a good idea, just say so and i'll shut up. i've been dying to send poorly translated mail to unfamiliar addresses in france anyway.

hey, i don't wanna sound like a struggler or anything, but has the idea of MP3 exchange ever come up around these parts? i realize there's some sound quality/conversion issues, particularly since most of the rare stuff will originate from vinyl or cassette. i think that as long as we stay away from any of the commercially released stuff, we'd be aces as to any copyright concerns. i get the feeling that the folks that hang around here are more interested in hearing will's songs than chasing down obscure int'l pressings that the collectors market drools over but never make it to the fans. anyone interested in tracking down "Libération" (the French newspaper w/ exclusive BPB release) subscribers? i thought not. who's got ideas?

'hi how are you' was originally one of the cassette tapes sold by daniel johnston on the streets of austin. homestead records released it as well as 'yip jump music' somtime in the mid to late 80's. both are great records, recorded in daniel's parent's garage using a cheap tape recorder, guitar and chord organ. i suppose they are still available, check yr local record store, dig? by the way, daniel's playing at the knitting factory in nyc very soon...

I bought the record from a guy at a table at the Charlottesville show who didn't seem interested in really trying to sell anything. People kept walking up and walking away. Finally I said: I want to buy the record. I don't know why others didn't seem to figure out how to do that. BTW Now that I've heard it about thirty times, I have to say that this is the best, the very best and greatest yet. There are all kinds of hooks and weird changes. I've even caught on to what the band is doing. It's..

Saw Will Last night in Cambridge, MA. Really Brilliant, with the exeption of a few small problems (a microphone problem during the first song, and some kid passing out during the opening of work hard/play hard) a good time was had by all. Picked up a copy of "I See a Darkness" really beautiful, really dark".

The Risen Lord, by DH Lawrence, is in the collection Pansies. You can find it in the Collected Poems. Will takes off a few stanzas from the beginning and end. So, Nat, what are the song names on 'I see a Darkness'.

Man oh friggin man! i caught the will/bill show at maxwells in hoboken on monday night, and i was just blown away. oldham's performance was so different and so much better than a month ago. the backing 6 piece of the anomoanan propped the prince up perfectly. they were (dare i say) rockin! and oldham was actually engaging and chatty. he actually almost changed my mind about him being a dick. the song selection was great, with everything from brand new songs back to songs from arise therefore, viva last blues, and couple older than that (most notably horses). and they did do 'jack and diane' during the encore as was mentioned by someone else. i'm looking forward to fridays show at the bowery ballroom.

I won't have opportunity to see the show until Thursday, but I believe Joya to be the best album he has done since the first one..the cover concept alone (for the lp) was brilliant. Viva la Joya!

BTW I have to admit to anybody who hasn't heard it yet that "Darkness" has some of the best lyrics yet. Actually, I think my intial problem may have been more with the fact that I don't feel the lyrics the way I did live, like on the title track where the chorus just starts to bore me now. But as said, my turntable is awful so this is probably the greatest album of the century or something for all i can tell.

"Darkness" is a beautiful album. It was just a let down at first because it sounds so much more like Joya than the live show led me to believe, and Joya is by far the least interesting thing he's done yet. But Darkness has really grown on me a lot and in its own right, though I wish I could get Madeleine Mary to hit better on my record player. I want the cd. Or a better turntable..

I hope someone's warned Mr. O. off playing Belfast when he comes to Ireland next month. It might be a bit dangerous for him to appear up there under his current moniker. Peace process and all the concept of a Williamite Jacobite might be a bit hard for some to swallow . . . I can't help thinking of the perhaps apocryphal story of some US metal band who, at an AIDS charity show up there, nearly sparked a riot by yelling 'This next wans for the Cause'. Otherwise, can't wait, whether or not I think Billy was Bonny or not . . . .

Also saw the VA shows. . . good stuff. Don't listen to Nat's rambling about "i see a darkness" and the lack of "energy". because of the back up band. Peter Townsend et al from the West Palm Beach sessions make this record excellent all around. If you want a lot of energy you probably should be listening to Metallica or something anyway. This sways and soothes and leaves the focus on Billy's lyrics. . . where it should be. . .

The Dec. 4th show at the Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville was insane. The first time I saw hiw play with Anomoanom I thought they were silly but now I know that they are the greatest rock and roll band of all time. Billy came out wearing a crown to denote Bonnie Prince songs and removed it to denote past songs and the new songs were so great live that I'm disappointed with I See a Darkness because it doesn't have half the energy. He was more animated than I've ever seen him; much body language and song by song narration. I only wish Anomoanon had played on his new album because they did a much better job with the songs than the recording band (mostly Joya line up but Ned instead of dave, maybe other differences I don't have the sleeve with me.) But the album is better than Joya and most of the songs are about love, I think. There are weird backup vocals like the Birds/Southside single. The live show's encore included a cover of Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" and a Christmas Medley, with an instrumental "O Come Let Us Adore Him" matched with singing from the audience and Billy threw candy canes. BTW the new Anomoanon ( I may be spelling the name wrong) is really nice. Over.

The topic revolves around the Will Oldham tune "Geshundheit"....it is a song sung from the point of view of a fan of Ochs' who is visited by him in a dream. The song's lyrics are made up of a telling of a conversation between the first person narrator and Phil Ochs.

Phil Ochs and Will Oldham in the same sentence. There is a god. Besides, some similarities, ( I know Louisville seems big on Mr. Ochs covers by Squirrel Bait and Bastro)what exactly is the connection? I must know I'm one of the 50fans of Phil Ochs

For the Bob Nastanovich fan, the single with horses/stable will is Will backed by the Pale Horse Rider, a Louisville outfit made up of Bob Nastanovich, Paul Oldham, Chris Layton & Pete Townshend. At least I know they were on Stable Will--not as sure about Horses. For Alexey, from Russia, Will was in Russia, & I thought it was before 'Days in the Wake'. He does that song 'Pozor' on Goat Songs: what language is that?
